I miss living so close to beautiful Muswell Hill. It's such a picturesque and quaint place to wander around on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The demographic is reflected in the shops: Whistles, Waitrose, Le Crueset; but there is a wider variety of restaurants and cafes on offer.
Chooks has the feeling of an American diner with its pared down decor, enamel crockery and kitchen roll napkins, but the theme isn't overwhelming, and thank god there wasn't waiting staff wearing some god awful costumes to boot. AJ and I shared a serving of mac n' cheese pops which are deep fried balls of traditional American style macaroni, served up with bbq sauce. They tasted like the kind of processed cheese that you know is really bad for you but you just can't stop yourself from eating. Full of filling and not scrimping on the good stuff, they were pretty rich so I'm glad we split a portion between us. The chocolate milkshake was a little disappointing, as despite the exciting looking serving, it wasn't the ice cream thick drink I was hoping for.
We both went for the buttermilk fried chicken with mash and gravy, which was a massive mistake as we could have easily split one between us; I had enough leftovers for lunch the next day! You could be forgiven for thinking the photo is of KFC, but the skin here wasn't overly greasy and had a great crunch to every bite, beating its southern fried cousin hands-down. My standard sides with this type of chicken would always be fries, maybe wedges at a push, but creamy mash was perfect - I'm a convert! With a well of steaming hot, thick gravy in the middle, I didn't even need to add my usual lashings of ketchup to help me wash it down.
Chooks serves up a sturdy American feast, in a chilled out setting, perfect for a lunchtime catch-up. It was my second visit, and I'd definitely drop in again next time I'm lucky enough to be in the area.

It's a little further out of central London, but Muswell Hill is worth visiting anyway so definitely go!
