An Afternoon at Ascot

ascot horse racing

I don't do fascinators. My hair is basically a hat, so adding anything on top of that is a bit null and void as it just disappears underneath follicles. But at the heart of all races outfits is some headgear, so with that out of the picture I was a bit stumped with where to start with my outfit for Ascot. I can do super dressed up but this wasn't Ladies Day so I needed to be smart but not really formal.

I'm wearing:
Coat: Debenhams
Dress: Oasis
Necklace: Accessorize
Ring: Topshop
Shoes: Topshop
I bought this dress from Oasis to wear out to dinner in Italy and at that point I went bare legged, but that would have been really bloody stupid thing to do in the UK in October. So I brought out my trusty black tights for the first time this winter and wore plain black pumps so that the pattern stayed a bit calm.

Well, until I threw on my baby blue, faux shearling monstrosity. It's not calm. It's arrogant as hell and I feel like Jackie O meets Karen O in it (and that would be an AMAZING combination).

Maybe that's what got me all cocky when it came to betting. Ascot is vast and it was really exciting to see the horses walk around the paddock before heading out onto the racecourse. I put a few ££s down on each race and the most I won back was £5.25 - I lost every other race. Clearly betting is not my forté, but the views from the top of the stands were really amazing and we could see the whole way down the green, so I still enjoyed every second.

My losses were interspersed with more food than I could manage, as well as a good dose of gin and tonics so it as hard to be disappointed with the day. It was exciting to experience the final day of the racing season. With Frankie Dettori racing and the Queen in attendance, I was in good company!

I was invited to Ascot as a guest of Ladbrokes, but my account is unbiased. If it wasn't, I probably would have won some money...
